Stages of Struggle and Celebration: Black Theatre in Texas is an exhibition exploring the history of black theatre and its cultural impact in five Texas cities.Featuring costumes, posters, set designs and “perfect moment” production photos, the is collection captures the unique history of black theatre in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin.
From its roots in Texas minstrel troupes of the 1800s up to the current works of writers, directors and producers today, this exhibition reveals the struggles, triumphs, and enduring legacy of black theatre in Texas. It’s an enlightening and inspiring journey, whether you’re a scholar, theatre artist, public school student, or member of the community at large.
