Summer Reading for Grown-Ups

Summer Reading for Grown-Ups!

As You Like It: Books to Suit Your Style

What is Summer Reading for Grown-Ups (SRG)?
It is a free incentive-based program to encourage adults to read and explore various library programs.

When does it start and end?

SRG runs from June 1 – August 1, 2016. Registration begins June 1 and continues through the end of the program.

How do I register?
You can register at any Houston Public Library location, online from your home computer or a mobile device.

How do I participate?
Read or listen to books (e-books and e-audiobooks are eligible), enter book titles or time read online, submit an original review and attend library sponsored events and programs. Attend author events, outdoor movie nights and/or participate in educational programs with your family. The more original book reviews you submit and the more library programs you attend, the greater your chance of winning.

What does Shakespeare have to do with SRG?
We are commemorating 400 years of William Shakespeare’s legacy. So read the comedies, tragedies, the sonnets, another classic or a contemporary take on classic literature including literary mashups! Read what you like and as you like it! You could win prizes for joining SRG, reading, submitting original reviews and attending library events.

What are the prizes?

  • Register for SRG and receive admission for two to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and a special offer from the University of Houston's School of Theatre and Dance
  • Weekly drawings for Houston area theater tickets
  • Attend author presentations and outdoor movie nights to be entered into a grand prize drawing for a 2016-2017 Theatre Under the Stars subscription package for two

What are your review guidelines?

Write a short, original review of the book that doesn't contain any spoilers. We reserve the right to add your review to the customer reviews in our online catalog, and we also reserve the right to deny your review due to unoriginal content. Select Add/View Log to enter your log and original review. In the event of an unoriginal or borrowed review, review denial does not remove the book from your reading log, nor does it count against your entries for the prize drawings.

Families Can Win Prizes Too!
Parents and caregivers can read this summer too! Sign up for SRG and get a chance to be one of the 100 families to win a FAMILY SUMMER READING PRIZE pack.

To win a family prize, the youth SRP participant must reach the 30 book badge level. The parent or caregiver must complete 1 original adult book review and 1 original children’s book review.

Family prizes include:

  • Two tickets to the Health Museum
  • Tickets to the Houston Museum of Natural Science Cockrell Butterfly Center*
  • Raising Cane’s coupon
  • Tickets to the Bike Museum
    *while supplies last
